Website Tutorial - Introduction
I hope that in this tutorial I can take some of the mystery
out of website building. My aim is to guide you through the process
without any techie speak.
If you follow along you will end up with your own working
website on your own computer at absolutely no cost to you. You will be
able to view your website via your own browser.
In this tutorial I will also give you the tools and show you
how you can publish your new website to the internet.
Please be aware that publishing your site is optional. To
publish your own site to the internet means that you will have to load
all the files we created on your computer to a hosting company's
computer [server].
Hosting companies charge around $15 per month to store your
files and serve them to the internet [bandwidth].
You will also have to buy an address for your website on the
internet [Domain Name] so you will have to register a Domain Name for
around $10 per year. Don't worry this tutorial will cover all these
processes.
Preparation:
Create 3 new folders on your desktop and name them as follows:
- Tools
- My Website
- My website jottings
To create new folders on your desk top - go to your desk top and right
mouse click on a vacant space, or anywhere on your wallpaper.
A box will pop up - select "new" then "folder".
A new folder will apear on your desktop with a blue shaded naming box
below it - type "Tools" - you have just created the first folder on
your desktop and named it "Tools"
Repeat the same process for the next two folders "My Website" and "My
website Jottings.
Download Tools:
In this tutorial we are going to use a "What You See Is What You Get"
[WYSIWYG] editor.
If you already have such a program on your computer - then skip this
step.
Otherwise you can download a free WYSIWYG editor at:
http://kompozer.net/download.php
Download the komposer zip file to the folder "Tools" you created on
your desktop.
Open the folder "Tools" and right mouse click on the Zip file you just
downloaded and select "Extract All"
When all the files are extracted -go to your "Tools Folder" and delete
the Zip folder. Create another folder within the "Tools" folder and
name it "WYSIWYG KOMPOSER"
Select all the extracted files from within your "Tools" folder and move
them to the "WYSIWYG KOMPOSER" folder that lives within your "Tools"
folder.
Open the "WYSIWYG KOMPOSER" folder and click on the install file or
.exe file - now follow the prompts to install the Komposer on your
computer. During the install if you get prompted to place an icon on
your desktop select YES or OK. Now whenever you want to use the
Komposer all you will need to do is
left click or double left mouse click on the Komposer Icon that resides
on your desktop.
We will be downloading some other tools later - just follow the same
instructions as above - only change the names of the folders to the
names of the different tools when we come to them.
